Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

I’d like to recommend a film that I watched a long time ago. It impressed me back then, and during this recent comeback of the pandemic, I came to realize more messages that it sends. It is called Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

It is an animated film, an action film and a sci-fi film as well. The story took place in Brooklyn, and is set in the modern world.

The main character, Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) was a normal Brooklyn teen who couldn’t live up to his parents’ expectations. However, he happened to gain his spidey-related abilities after being bitten by a spider. At the same time, the notorious villain, Kingpin was working on a super collider, which opened up the time tunnel, causing five more spider-people, from five other universes to show up in Miles’s universe: a middle-aged Peter Parker, the hard-boiled Spider-Man Noir, the Japanese girl Peni Parker, the tough Spider-Gwen, and the Spider-Ham Peter Pork. With the help of them, Miles fought against Kingpin. The nerdy and nervous high school student finally matured into a real superhero, who knows his own responsibilities, and takes control of his powers.

You may think that the storyline is just cliche, but the film proved to be different from the other Spider-Man movies-in many ways. Firstly, the spider-people in this film are not made perfect. Instead, they have problems with their lives and need time to grow up, too. For instance, Peter Parker once abandoned himself after breaking up with Mary Jane in his own universe. Miles, as a teenager, suffered even more confusion and depression facing all the changes. All these downs arouse empathy among us. Secondly, the film is a collection of art. It was a combination of 3D animation and original Marvel comics style, with poppy colors, sketchy lines, and even cool speech bubbles, making this Spider-Man universe fresh and stunning-the first of its kind. As for the soundtracks, they match the visual effects and add to the aesthetic enjoyment of the film. Last but not least, this Marvel movie breaks the classic format of superhero stories. Rather than repeating the known-to-all ‘With great power comes great responsibility’, it emphasizes ‘It could be anyone under that mask’ – Each one of us can make a difference, and there’s no need to worry when duty calls. It also tries to send out messages that family and friends are always our strongest support. This is really helpful for anyone suffering the same ‘growing pain’ as Miles.

I enjoyed this amazing film, and I won’t hesitate to give it a ten out of ten. It manages to tell a comic book origin tale, a heart-warming family tale and a grand-scale multiversal threat tale perfectly. It’s definitely worth seeing, whoever you watch it with.
